PULSE TCM Moxibustion Therapy

Deep-Penetrating Heat Therapy to Restore Qi, Relieve Pain, and Rebalance Your Vitality

What is Moxibustion?

Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) therapy that involves the burning of moxa, or dried mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris),  near specific points on the body. It is often used in conjunction with acupuncture and other TCM techniques as a way to stimulate and promote healing within the body.

Traditionally, moxibustion therapy involves burning the moxa, which can come in a cone or stick form, and holding the lit moxa over targeted acupoints on the body.

At PULSE, we use a modernised, safer method called ‘smokeless moxibustion’. It retains the benefits of heat generation without producing pungent smoke that may irritate the airways. The smokeless moxa stick can be placed in a box on acupoints of the back or abdomen. It can also be handheld at a distance from the acupoints requiring stimulation.

Moxibustion is believed to stimulate the flow of Qi, which is considered the body’s vital energy in traditional Chinese medicine.

The heat generated by burning moxa can improve circulation, relax muscles, and promote the flow of Qi and blood in the body, helping to restore balance and alleviate various health conditions.

Benefits of Moxibustion

Moxibustion may be chosen as a treatment method based on the patient’s specific condition and body constitution, as determined by our physicians from the consultation.

It is usually recommended for patients with a ‘weak’ or ‘cold’ body constitution.  Moxibustion is often used for the following health issues (but not limited to):

  • Joint pain & arthritis conditions
  • Infertility
  • Menstrual cramps & pain
  • Digestive issues, bloating, diarrhoea,
  • Energy deficiencies
  • Low immunity

After moxibustion, patients often report feeling greater warmth in their body. They may also experience improved circulation to extremities.

This is supported by scientific research evidence, which have reported an increase in red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets around the area of treatment;  effectively improving oxygen uptake by the cells of the body and driving the targeted systemic functions.

Is Moxibustion Safe?

Generally, moxibustion is considered safe when administered by trained and qualified physicians who follow proper hygiene and safety protocols. Trained practitioners would know to take precautions to ensure that the burning moxa does not come into direct contact with the skin and that patients are not exposed to excessive heat.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What exactly is Moxibustion?
Moxibustion is a traditional TCM heat therapy where dried mugwort (moxa) is burned near specific acupoints. The goal is to warm the body’s meridians, dispel “cold” and “dampness,” and stimulate the flow of Qi and blood to promote natural healing.
What is the difference between Acupuncture and Moxibustion?
While acupuncture uses needles to stimulate points mechanically, moxibustion uses thermal energy (heat). They are often used together—a technique known as “Warm Needle” acupuncture—where moxa is placed on the end of a needle to send deep-penetrating heat into the acupoint.
I’m worried about the smoke. Does it smell?
At Pulse TCM, we primarily use smokeless moxibustion. Traditional moxa can produce heavy smoke and a lingering scent; our modern approach provides the same therapeutic heat benefits without the smoke, making it a more comfortable and breathable experience for patients.
Does moxibustion hurt or burn the skin?
No. We focus on indirect moxibustion. The heat source is held a few centimeters away from the skin or placed in a protective “moxa box.” You should feel a pleasant, deep-penetrating warmth. Our physicians closely monitor the temperature to ensure it remains soothing and safe.
What conditions can Moxibustion help with?

It is highly effective for conditions TCM classifies as “Cold” or “Stagnant,” including:

  • Pain Management: Chronic back pain, stiff shoulders, and arthritis.
  • Women’s Health: Menstrual cramps, irregular cycles, and fertility support (warming the “cold uterus”).
  • Digestive Issues: Bloating, chronic diarrhea, and indigestion.
  • General Wellness: Cold hands and feet, low immunity, and fatigue.
Who should avoid this treatment?

Moxibustion is generally not recommended for:

  • Individuals with a “Heat” constitution (e.g., frequent thirst, red face, or fever).
  • Those with acute skin inflammations, open wounds, or high fevers.
  • Pregnant women (specifically on the lower abdomen/lower back, unless under specialized care for breech baby turning).
  • During your menstrual period (unless specifically prescribed for cramps).
How will I feel after the session?
Most patients feel deeply relaxed and physically warmer. Some may notice slight redness in the treated area, which is a normal sign of increased blood circulation and usually fades within an hour.
Post-Treatment Care: Are there any "rules" after a session?

To maximize the effects, we recommend:

  • Stay Warm: Avoid cold showers or direct exposure to strong air-conditioning for at least 4 hours.
  • Hydrate: Drink plenty of warm water to help your body process the treatment.
  • Avoid Cold Foods: Refrain from icy drinks or raw foods immediately after, as these can counteract the “warming” benefits of the therapy.
