What is Acupuncture ?
At its heart, TCM Acupuncture is an ancient healing art that involves the insertion of very fine, sterile needles into specific points on the body. These points, known as acupoints, lie along invisible pathways called meridians.
In TCM, these meridians are believed to be channels through which Qi (pronounced “chee”), our vital life force energy, flows.
When Qi flow is disrupted or blocked, it can lead to pain, illness, and disharmony. Acupuncture gently stimulates these acupoints, aiming to:

Unblock stagnant Qi
Relieving pain and promoting smooth energy flow.

Balance Yin and Yang
Restoring harmony within the body's opposing yet complementary forces.

Strengthen organ function
Supporting the body's internal systems for optimal health.

Promote natural healing
Activating your body's innate ability to recover and regenerate.

Traditional acupuncture vs Electroacupuncture
Understanding the nuances of energetic healing

Traditional Acupuncture: For Holistic Harmony
This classic form of acupuncture involves the precise insertion of very fine needles into specific points on your body. It's a gentle yet profound method for harmonizing your body's energy (Qi) and promoting overall wellness.

Electroacupuncture: For Enhanced Pain & Muscle Relief
Electroacupuncture takes traditional needling a step further by applying a mild electrical current through the acupuncture needles. This enhances the stimulation, making it particularly effective for conditions requiring more intensive intervention.
The Science of Acupuncture
Beyond Ancient Wisdom
- Natural Painkillers
-
Neuromodulation & Pain Relief
Needles stimulate nerves, triggering your brain to release endorphins (natural painkillers) and other neurotransmitters. This effectively “closes the gate” on pain signals, reducing your perception of pain.
By embracing both its historical wisdom and its scientifically verifiable effects, we aim to provide you with a powerful and evidence-informed path to better health.

How Does Acupuncture Work?
A TCM Perspective
According to Chinese medicine, the body has a network of pathways called meridians through which Qi flows. The smooth flow of Qi is believed to be essential for maintaining health.
Acupuncture points are located along these meridians. By inserting needles at specific points, acupuncture balances the flow of Qi along the meridians. By unblocking or redistributing Qi, health imbalances can be corrected. Different acupoints would be targeted to address different issues.
A Scientific Perspective
Inserting needles into acupuncture points stimulates sensory nerves under the skin and in muscles. This stimulation sends signals to the brain and spinal cord, leading to the release of various endorphins (natural painkillers) and neurotransmitters. This can result in pain relief and other therapeutic effects.
The mechanisms of needle insertion can also:
– Improve blood flow and circulation to the treated area
– Enhance the delivery of nutrients and oxygen
– Aid in the removal of waste products
– Trigger the production of immune system cells and growth factors, which encourages the body’s natural healing processes.
Benefits of Acupuncture
Acupuncture is one of the most widely used TCM treatments due to its wide-ranging therapeutic benefits for various health issues. It can be used on its own as a primary treatment or in conjunction with other TCM treatments.
Acupuncture is most commonly used to provide relief for the following issues (but not limited to):
Pain Relief & Rehabilitation
- Pains & aches
Acupuncture is especially effective as a pain management method (e.g. back pain, knee pain, frozen shoulder). When executed proficiently by a qualified physician, patients often report almost instantaneous pain relief in treated areas. - Sports injuries
- Muscular spasms, numbness
- Headaches and migraines
- Post stroke rehabilitation
- Bell’s Palsy
Internal & Reproductive Health

- Sinuses
- Allergies
- Skin conditions (acne, eczema, firming sagging skin)
- Weight loss (boosting metabolism, suppressing appetite, rebalancing body)
- Hair loss, and many more.
- Addictions (Smoking, alcohol, drugs, etc.)
In deciding which type of TCM treatment is best for you, it would be best to consult a qualified TCM physician about your particular condition. They will conduct an assessment and recommend the best treatment tailored to your needs.
Is Acupuncture Safe?
Acupuncture is generally very safe when performed by a trained and qualified practitioner using sterile needles. The risk of infection is minimal. At PULSE, we adhere to strict safety and hygiene protocols, utilizing sterile, single-use needles and disinfecting insertion sites.
While most patients experience no side effects, some might briefly feel dizzy, experience minor bruising, or slight bleeding. If you have an alcohol allergy, please notify your physician.
Is Acupuncture Painful?
Acupuncture needles are extremely thin, much finer than the needles used for injections or blood draws.
Many patients report that they barely felt anything while some describe the prick of acupuncture needles as a tingling sensation or pressure around the insertion point.
Acupuncture sessions are designed to be relaxing. Many find the process calming and even fall asleep during treatment.
Some individuals may feel some soreness around the treated points post-treatment. However, this is not a cause for concern. It is believed to signify ‘stagnation’ in the treated areas
