With the child prone and calm, gather soft skin folds on both sides of the spine and roll upward from the lower back toward the neck. Five gentle passes when a physician has taught the method.
In brief
Nie ji 捏脊 is a classic paediatric Tuina method: gather soft skin folds on both sides of the spine and roll them upward from the lower back toward the upper back or nape. About five soft passes is a common educational dose when a physician has shown the grip. It is used for constitution and immunity support, not for acute contagious illness.
Routine
Child lying prone, calm, and warm enough. Start at the lower back near the bottom of the spine. Use thumbs and index fingers to lift a soft fold of skin on both sides of the spine, not hard bone pressure.
Pinch and roll the folds upward toward the upper back or nape. Keep the motion rhythmic and light. Five passes is a common teaching dose. Stop immediately if the child cries hard or the skin reddens sharply.
