What it is

Warming care that moves cold stagnation

Dried mugwort (moxa) is warmed near selected points along the channels (meridians) to support circulation, comfort, and recovery, always after a physician consultation and TCM pattern diagnosis.

In Chinese medicine, cold and dampness can slow qi and blood, showing up as joint stiffness, cold hands and feet, low energy, or menstrual discomfort. Moxibustion brings gentle heat to those pathways so stuck areas can move again. At PULSE we use modern smokeless moxa, which keeps the therapeutic warmth without heavy smoke. MOH-registered physicians choose where and how long to warm for your pattern, and can coordinate with physiotherapy and Allied Health when your plan needs both.

Common concerns

What conditions can moxibustion help?

Moxibustion often sits with acupuncture, herbs, or tuina. Physicians treat patterns, not only disease names. The concerns below are common in clinic and not exhaustive.

In TCM we often warm for cold, dampness, and deficiency patterns: a body that feels cold, heavy, or low in energy. Your physician will name the pattern in plain language (and in TCM terms when useful) so care stays specific to you.

Modalities

Smokeless box or handheld moxa

Both share the same diagnostic groundwork. Your physician chooses a moxa box, a handheld stick held at a safe distance, or a combination when it fits your pattern.

  • Smokeless moxa box

A smokeless moxa stick sits in a protective box over acupoints on the back or abdomen. You feel steady, deep warmth while resting in a private room.

  • Handheld smokeless stick

The physician holds a smokeless stick a few centimetres from selected points, moving with your comfort. Useful when smaller areas need focused warming without a box.

Smokeless moxa is our usual approach: therapeutic heat without the heavy smoke of traditional sticks. A box suits broader areas on the back or abdomen. Handheld work suits precise points. Warm-needle acupuncture (moxa on a needle) may be discussed when needling and warming belong together.

After moxa

Warmth that lingers briefly

Mild redness can reflect increased circulation and usually fades within about an hour. You should leave feeling pleasantly warm, not scorched.

  • Stay warm; prefer warm drinks and avoid cold showers or strong air-conditioning for a few hours when you can.
  • Say so during treatment if heat feels too strong so distance or duration can be adjusted.
  • Protect the warmed area from cold wind on the way home when marks of warmth are still fresh.

Comfort & safety

Warmth you can feel, not fear

We focus on indirect moxibustion. The heat source is held a few centimetres from the skin or placed in a protective moxa box. You should feel a deep, pleasant warmth. Physicians monitor temperature throughout.

  • Generally not recommended for strong heat constitutions (for example frequent thirst, flushed face, or fever), open wounds, or acute skin inflammation in the treatment area.
  • Pregnancy needs specialised assessment; lower abdomen and lower back warming are restricted unless under specific physician guidance.
  • Tell your physician if you are menstruating, unless moxa is prescribed for cramps.
  • Mild redness after treatment can reflect increased circulation and usually fades within about an hour.
  • Moxibustion complements (and does not replace) urgent or specialist Western medical care.

How it works

How moxibustion works

Classical TCM framing and what clinic practice describes physiologically, side by side, with a short evidence sketch below.

A TCM perspective

Qi, cold, and warming

Chinese medicine describes qi and blood moving through a network of channels (meridians). When cold or dampness settles in, flow can slow and show up as stiffness, fatigue, or menstrual discomfort. Moxibustion warms those pathways to dispel cold, support circulation, and ease local stagnation.

A clinical perspective

Heat, circulation, ease

Controlled thermal input near the skin increases local blood flow and can relax soft tissue. Patients often describe a pleasant, penetrating warmth. Mild redness can appear afterward as circulation rises and usually settles within about an hour.

What research and practice help explain

A plain summary, not a promise of outcome for every person.

  • Local circulation Warming can increase blood flow in treated tissues, supporting comfort and the feel of ease in cold or stiff areas. [1]
  • Musculoskeletal & recovery contexts Moxibustion is discussed alongside acupuncture and related therapies in sports and recovery literature as a warming adjunct, not a standalone cure. [2]
  • Sensation vs burn At PULSE we use indirect, smokeless methods. Heat is held away from the skin or placed in a protective box so the goal is soothing warmth, not contact burn. [1]
  • Regulated practice in Singapore At PULSE, moxibustion is delivered by TCM physicians registered with the Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners Board under MOH. [3]

Moxa or acupuncture?

Warming and needling often sit in one plan. This is orientation after diagnosis.

  • Prefer moxibustion when…

Cold-type patterns, deep warmth, or smokeless heat on the abdomen or back is the clearer lever after pulse and tongue reading.

  • Prefer acupuncture when…

Channel and local points need needling as the main stimulus, with moxa added only when warming belongs too.

Your visit

What to expect

Consultation first. Moxa only when it fits your plan.

  1. Consultation

Share history, goals, medications, pregnancy status, and heat or cold preferences. First visits usually take 45–60 minutes.

  2. TCM diagnosis

Pulse and tongue diagnosis guide where to warm, box or handheld technique, and how long heat stays near the points.

  3. Treatment

Smokeless moxa is applied in a private room. You should feel pleasant warmth; say so if it feels too strong so distance or duration can be adjusted.

  4. Plan & aftercare

Leave with clear next steps. Stay warm, prefer warm drinks, and avoid cold showers or strong air-conditioning for a few hours when you can.

From the clinic

  • Cold-type menstrual pain and fertility plans often need warmth as much as needles. I choose moxa where the pattern sits, then pace the plan so the body warms without forcing heat where it does not belong.

  • As a biomedical scientist and TCM practitioner, I look at cold stagnation through both lenses: channel cold in clinic language, and local circulation and comfort in physiological terms.

FAQs

Moxibustion questions, answered

Sensation, smoke, suitability, aftercare, and how pricing works.

What exactly is moxibustion?

Moxibustion is a traditional TCM heat therapy where dried mugwort (moxa) is warmed near specific acupoints. The goal is to warm the channels, dispel cold and dampness, and support the flow of qi and blood.

What is the difference between acupuncture and moxibustion?

Acupuncture uses fine needles for mechanical stimulation at points. Moxibustion uses thermal energy (heat). They are often used together. Warm-needle acupuncture places moxa on a needle to send deeper warmth into a point when clinically appropriate.

I’m worried about the smoke. Does it smell?

At PULSE we primarily use smokeless moxibustion. Traditional moxa can produce heavy smoke and a lingering scent. Our modern approach aims for the same therapeutic heat with a more comfortable, breathable clinic experience.

Does moxibustion hurt or burn the skin?

No. We focus on indirect moxibustion. The heat source is held a few centimetres from the skin or placed in a protective moxa box. You should feel pleasant, deep warmth. Physicians monitor temperature so it stays soothing and safe.

What conditions can moxibustion help with?

It is often considered for patterns TCM classifies as cold or stagnant, including joint stiffness and arthritis-related discomfort, menstrual cramps and fertility warming support, digestive issues such as bloating or loose stools, and general concerns such as cold hands and feet, low energy, or low immunity patterns. Care is confirmed after consultation.

Who should avoid this treatment?

Moxibustion is generally not recommended for strong heat constitutions (for example frequent thirst, flushed face, or fever), open wounds, acute skin inflammation, or high fevers. Pregnancy requires specialised assessment, especially for lower abdomen and lower back. During menstruation, warming is used only when specifically prescribed for cramps.

How will I feel after the session?

Most patients feel relaxed and physically warmer. Mild redness in the treated area can appear from increased circulation and usually fades within about an hour.

What should I do after moxibustion?

Stay warm and avoid cold showers or strong air-conditioning for at least four hours when you can. Drink warm water. Avoid icy drinks or very cold raw foods immediately afterward so they do not counteract the warming intent of the session.

How much does moxibustion cost at PULSE TCM?

Moxibustion starts from $30–$80 depending on the plan quoted. This does not include GST or a TCM consultation. Your physician will confirm the recommended approach during consultation.
