Softening persistent sadness, mood swings, and frustration when days feel flat or tight.
TCM × Allied Health
Steady the body with physician-led TCM. Rebuild mood skills with CBT and Behavioural Activation when thoughts and habits keep low mood in place.
In brief
The TCM × PSYCH Depression programme pairs physician-led acupuncture and herbal care with optional psychotherapy from a PULSE Allied Health psychologist, using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Behavioural Activation. TCM may help target physiological responses linked to mood; psychotherapy works on thoughts and behaviours that maintain depression. Visits are separate. Care complements, rather than replaces, psychiatry or prescribed medication, and suits mild to moderate presentations.
The programme
Depression can feel like seeing the world through dark-tinted glasses. Energy, motivation, and interest drop, and daily tasks can feel heavier than they should. Mild, moderate, and severe presentations sit on a spectrum; this programme is framed for mild to moderate support alongside appropriate medical care when needed.
Signs often span emotional, cognitive, physical, and behavioural domains: persistent low mood or loss of interest; poorer concentration; changes in weight, appetite, or sleep; fatigue; withdrawal; and difficulty carrying out daily responsibilities. Thoughts of death or self-harm need urgent mental-health support, not this programme alone. In TCM, mood is linked to Qi and organ function. Classic organ-emotion pairings include Heart with joy, Liver with anger, Spleen with contemplation, Lung with worry, and Kidney with fear. Weakened organ function may affect emotional health; heavy worry, stress, or sadness may also strain organ systems and block Qi. At PULSE, MOH-registered physicians name the pattern in plain language, then may add acupuncture and safety-regulated herbs. When thoughts, behaviours, or motivation loops keep low mood in place, PULSE Allied Health psychotherapy (CBT and Behavioural Activation) can sit beside TCM. For sleep-first integrative care, see our Insomnia programme; for TCM-only sleep, stress, and burnout, see Sleep & Stress.

Approach to healing
Your clinicians recommend a combination based on assessment. Not every visit uses every modality, and TCM and psychotherapy are booked as separate visits.
Acupuncture is widely used as complementary care for depressive symptoms. In clinic it may help unblock stagnations and regulate Qi flow, supporting stress relief, mood, and a sense of well-being; restore balance and organ-system function linked with emotional and physical symptoms; and may support mood-related neurochemical pathways (for example signalling associated with endorphins, serotonin, and dopamine) that can influence mood, sleep, energy, and motivation when that fits your presentation. Suitability is confirmed after consultation.
Acupuncture treatment
Chinese herbal formulas have long been used for mood presentations. Research explores their role alongside conventional care; we do not claim they match antidepressants, and they do not replace prescribed medication. Prescribed blends address unique underlying imbalances, may influence pathways involved in mood regulation, and certain herbs carry calming, sleep-promoting, and relaxing effects. Formulas are tailored to your symptoms and pattern under physician oversight.
Chinese herbal medicine
CBT starts from the link between thoughts, behaviours, and emotions. An educational example: harsh self-talk such as “I am useless” may sit with skipping responsibilities and feelings of sadness or disappointment in oneself. CBT helps identify and shift unhelpful thoughts and behaviours toward more realistic, workable ones. Behavioural Activation addresses the common depression cycle: low mood leads to low energy, fatigue, and decreased interest; activity and responsibilities drop; guilt, hopelessness, and a sense of ineffectiveness rise, which then feeds depression. Gradual steps back into rewarding and meaningful activity can begin to lift mood and energy. Sessions are with a PULSE Allied Health clinical psychologist (including Lead Clinical Psychologist Dr Jaswyn Chin, Doctor of Psychology Clinical, SRP-registered, with training across CBT, MBCT, ACT, and EMDR). Fees sit with Allied Health; enquire when booking.
Meet Dr Jaswyn ChinOn the TCM side, care aims to regulate Qi, support organ balance, and ease depressive symptoms through physiological pathways. Psychotherapy targets underlying psychological causes, helps change thoughts and behaviours that maintain depression, and supports steadier recovery skills over time. Allied Health joins when CBT or Behavioural Activation is part of the plan.
What to expect
Your mood picture is unique, and your care should be too. The phases below are a general guide. Session count, frequency, and whether you use TCM, psychotherapy, or both are customised after assessment. TCM and psychology visits are scheduled separately.
A TCM consultation names Liver, Heart, and Spleen patterns in plain language. When psychotherapy is part of the plan, a separate Allied Health intake maps mood, thought patterns, activity levels, and goals. Focus: clear diagnosis across both lenses before treatment intensifies.
Acupuncture and, when indicated, herbal medication settle physiological and pattern drivers at PULSE TCM clinics. CBT and Behavioural Activation sessions build skills for thoughts, behaviours, and re-engagement at Allied Health. Focus: steadier mood and usable tools between visits.
Review spacing, reinforce what works, and decide whether Insomnia (sleep-first) or TCM-only Sleep & Stress maintenance fits once skills are steadier. Focus: durable habits and a realistic long-term plan.
TCM pattern care and CBT / Behavioural Activation sit in one programme story, with clear hand-offs between physician and psychologist.
Acupuncture and herbs work on Qi, organ balance, and physiological responses; psychotherapy targets psychological causes and activity cycles.

We never ask you to stop prescribed antidepressants or psychiatric medication without your prescribing doctor’s guidance.

MOH-registered TCM physicians work with mood, sleep, fatigue, and related patterns islandwide. CBT and Behavioural Activation sessions are with PULSE Allied Health, booked separately from TCM visits.
When low mood sits beside a TCM pattern, acupuncture alone may settle the body while thoughts and inactivity keep the cycle going. Naming both layers early keeps the plan honest.
Many people arrive already on antidepressants or other mental-health medication. I design TCM as complementary support, and I never advise stopping prescribed care without the prescribing doctor’s guidance.

FAQs
Booking, separate visits, session counts, TCM-or-psych alone, medications, crisis care, and sibling programmes.
You may use TCM alone, psychotherapy alone, or both. TCM visits include a physician consultation with acupuncture or a herbal prescription as agreed (about 45 to 60 minutes) at PULSE TCM clinics islandwide. Psychotherapy sessions (about 60 minutes) are with a PULSE Allied Health psychologist and are booked as separate visits.
Yes. On booking, choose your concern and add Psychology under services if you want the psych arm, or mention both in the note. Combining clinicians often helps when thoughts, behaviours, or motivation loops sit beside a TCM pattern, but neither is mandatory. We still recommend considering both for a fuller plan when presentations are mixed.
It varies with severity, lifestyle stress, and whether psychological factors are strong. As a general guide, TCM may run about 5 to 10 sessions (often weekly; twice weekly for more serious cases), and psychology about 4 to 8 sessions (weekly at first, then fortnightly). Your clinicians set a realistic pace; results vary.
Psychotherapy is conducted at PULSE Allied Health (programme guidance currently points to Camden Medical Centre, near Orchard Blvd MRT). TCM sessions remain available at PULSE TCM clinics islandwide. Same-day dual visits may be possible but will be at different locations.
TCM physicians and psychologists commonly see people with mixed presentations and tailor care accordingly. When sleep is primary, the Insomnia (TCM × PSYCH) programme may fit better; for TCM-only sleep and stress, see Sleep & Stress. Our psychologist can also support related concerns such as relationship or self-esteem issues when relevant.
Acupuncture needles are very fine, and many people find sessions calming or even drift toward sleep during treatment. If you prefer not to have acupuncture, tell your physician. Chinese herbal medication, or other indicated TCM modalities such as cupping or moxibustion, may be used instead when suitable.
Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine are often used alongside prescribed antidepressants or other psychiatric medicines. For herbs, leave about a two-hour gap from other medicines unless your physician advises otherwise, and check with your prescribing doctor first. We never advise stopping prescribed medication without that clinician’s supervision.
This programme is more suitable for mild to moderate depression and is not designed for crisis situations. Where urgent intervention is needed, call the Institute of Mental Health Helpline on 6389 2222, or seek emergency care. If you are at immediate risk of harm, contact emergency services.
