Find Tou Wei (ST8) for frontal headache

头维 · Head Corner sits on the Stomach channel at the corner of the forehead, just inside the anterior hairline. A short home press when brow and forehead ache gather up front.

In brief

Tou Wei (头维, ST8) sits at the corner of the forehead, about 0.5 cun (roughly half a thumb-width) within the anterior hairline. Feel for a slight tender spot where the brow line meets the temple hairline, not on hard bone alone. Use the thumb and index finger of one hand to locate both sides, then gentle pinch-massage left and right for about one to two minutes. Used when frontal (forehead) headache gathers across the brow. Stop if pressure turns sharp.

Point guide

Find & press

  1. Find the forehead hairline corner

Sit comfortably. Trace the front hairline to where it turns at the corner of the forehead toward the temple. Move about 0.5 cun (half a thumb-width) into the hairline and feel for a slight tender spot. Chinese cue: 在头侧部,当额角发际上0.5寸。

  2. Pinch-massage both sides

Use the thumb and index finger of one hand to locate the points on both the left and right sides of the head. Do a gentle pinching motion to massage both acupoints together. Keep the pressure kind on the scalp. A dull, slight soreness is common. Chinese: 以一手拇、食指同时取穴,轻柔捏按左右头维。

  3. Hold 1–2 minutes

Continue the gentle pinch-massage for about one to two minutes when forehead ache gathers across the brow. Ease off sooner if the press feels sharp or wrong.

  4. Stop cues

Ease off if the press feels sharp, if dizziness appears, or if the scalp is broken or inflamed. Mild ache that eases on release is common; sharp pain is a stop signal. Sudden worst-ever headache, fever with stiff neck, vision loss, or weakness after head injury need urgent care, not self-press.

FAQs

Quick questions

Where is the Tou Wei (ST8) acupuncture point?

At the corner of the forehead, about 0.5 cun within the anterior hairline, where the front hairline turns toward the temple. Feel for a slight tender spot rather than hard bone alone. Both sides of the head have a Tou Wei point. Chinese: 在头侧部,当额角发际上0.5寸,头维穴。

头维穴位置在哪里?

在头侧部,当额角发际上0.5寸。取穴时沿前发际找到额角转折处,再向发际内约半横指按压,左右皆有。

What is Tou Wei (头维) used for?

Classically on the Stomach channel for frontal (forehead) headache that gathers across the brow. Home press is a short habit between visits, not a substitute for sudden worst-ever headache, fever with stiff neck, or headache after trauma.

How do I massage Tou Wei for forehead pain?

Locate both hairline corners 0.5 cun inside the front hairline. Use the thumb and index finger of one hand to gentle pinch-massage left and right together for about one to two minutes. Sharp pain means ease off.

How long should I press ST8, and should it hurt?

About one to two minutes of gentle pinch-massage on both sides is the usual educational habit. A dull ache or deep tenderness is the cue. Sharp pain, shooting tingling, or numbness means ease off.

Is Tou Wei for frontal or temple headache?

This page targets frontal (forehead / brow) pain. Temple (side) headache often uses other points such as Zhong Zhu (TE3) on the hand. A physician can match the pattern after pulse and tongue.

Can I press only one side for one-sided forehead ache?

You may start on the more tender side. Many people still pinch-massage both Tou Wei points in one sitting so left and right stay even.
