Hands placing a Vaccaria ear seed during auriculotherapy at PULSE TCM

Auriculotherapy

Ear points mirror the body. Vaccaria plasters, magnetic beads, or fine needles stimulate 耳穴 after a pattern read, with a home press between visits.

In brief

Auriculotherapy is ear stimulation on the outer ear: needles, magnetic beads, or Vaccaria seeds (王不留行籽), never in the canal. Nogier mapped neurological reflexes and qi correspondences as an inverted fetus; meridians also pass through the ear. Plasters let you press between visits beside body acupuncture. For one-sided pain, use the same-side ear. Clinic placement first.

01 · What it is

What auriculotherapy is

耳穴 · 耳穴贴压 · auricular acupoint pressure

Auriculotherapy is auricular acupoint pressure, or ear stimulation: selected points on the outer ear, never the canal. A physician may use fine needles, magnetic beads, or Vaccaria seeds (王不留行籽) on a small plaster.

The plaster does not pierce the skin. You press it between visits so stimulation continues after clinic care.

02 · How it works

How auriculotherapy works

Clinic maps sit in two lineages at once: TCM channels through the ear, and neurological reflex work first organised in France by Paul Nogier. Outer-ear zones correspond to body regions in the pattern of an inverted fetus. Change is thought to come through qi flow and through sympathetic and parasympathetic regulation.

In TCM, health depends on the flow of qi. Many meridians pass through the ears. Stimulating a selected point aims to affect the matching region, function, or organ. Easing a stuck channel may support comfort in pain and in everyday patterns such as sleep or digestion.

Ear points as a body map

Maps name helix-rim zones for toes, fingers, and ankle; the concha for internal organs; the lobe for face and sense organs. Shen Men sits in the triangular fossa. A physician chooses points after pulse and tongue, not from the diagram alone.

03 · How we stimulate

Seeds, ear needles, or PLAY byEAR

Vaccaria plasters (耳穴贴压) are the usual between-visit method. Fine ear needles sit in the same session as body acupuncture when a stronger stimulus is indicated. PLAY byEAR extends the press at home after a first clinic map.

Three ways to stimulate 耳穴
Method How it feels When it sits in the plan
Physician-placed ear seedsVaccaria 王不留行籽 or a small bead on tape. Needle-free. Mild tenderness or warmth when you press is common. Busy weeks between visits. You press two or three times a day for 3–7 days.
Auricular acupunctureFine sterile needles on ear points. A stronger, more precise stimulus. The skin is pierced only at the point. Often in the same session as body acupuncture, when the pattern asks for it.
PLAY byEARHome refill kit with a point map. The same plaster press, after you have seen a first placement. Between-visit care. A product purchase, not a clinic procedure fee.

04 · Concerns

What ear seeds may help

Ear seeds support comfort after a pattern read. They do not replace a consult, a programme, or specialist care.

Concerns where ear seeds may sit in a plan
Concern Typical lean May help
SciaticaRadiating leg pain. Same-side ear beside body acupuncture. Pain & Injuries programme
Chronic painOngoing regional discomfort. Between-visit press after clinic needling. Pain & Injuries programme
MigraineHead pain with a mapped ear set. Brain Cortex, Occiput, Temple, Forehead on the antitragus and upper lobe. Headache sample
InsomniaDifficulty falling or staying asleep. Restless-spirit or sleep plan, beside acupuncture or herbs. Sleep & Stress programme
BloatingDigestive unease. Selected ear points after pulse and tongue. Pattern-led digestive care
ConstipationSluggish stools. Adjunct to food and points matched to the type. Not a laxative. TCM for constipation
Weight gainAdjunct only. May sit beside a metabolic or appetite plan. Not a slimming protocol. Weight Management programme
Menstrual crampCycle comfort. Ear points when the cycle pattern is named. TCM for menstrual cramps
AnxietyDaytime tension. Tension or restless-spirit plan. Not a substitute for mental-health care when that is needed. Sleep & Stress programme
AddictionAdjunct beside specialist care. Sometimes included as support. Does not replace a dedicated addiction or specialist programme.

When to book for ear seeds

If you want a first map, have adhesive allergy, or symptoms keep returning, a physician can decide whether plasters or ear needling belong beside acupuncture. PLAY byEAR on P:TTERN is a between-visit refill, not a clinic fee.

05 · Home care

How to use ear seeds correctly

For pain on one side, place seeds on the same-side ear. Press about 10 times until the point feels warm, then massage two or three times a day. Wear 3–7 days. Outer ear only, never the canal.

Stop and remove for irritation

Watch the skin under the plaster. Take the seeds off the same day if any of these show.

1. Redness

The skin around the plaster looks flushed or angry.

2. Swelling

The point puffs or the ear feels tight.

3. Tenderness that worsens

A dull ache on press is common. Sharper or spreading pain is not.

4. Itchiness

Itch often means the adhesive does not suit the skin.

Sample placement for headache

A common headache set uses four outer-ear points on the antitragus and upper lobe: Brain Cortex, Occiput, Temple, and Forehead. A physician chooses the set after pulse and tongue. This is orientation, not a fixed protocol.

Place, press, wear 3–7 days

Clean and dry, attach with tweezers or fingers, press until warm, then massage two or three times a day. Same-side for unilateral pain.

Skip the canal. Remove for redness, swelling, worsening tenderness, or itch.

FAQs

Auriculotherapy questions

What ear stimulation is, how the map works, home press, and how seeds differ from ear acupuncture.

What is auriculotherapy?

Auriculotherapy is auricular acupoint pressure or ear stimulation. Selected points on the external ear are stimulated with acupuncture needles, magnetic beads, or Vaccaria seeds (王不留行籽). Seeds sit on the outer ear, never in the canal.

How does auriculotherapy work?

Clinic maps sit in TCM and in neurological reflex work first organised by Paul Nogier. Outer-ear zones correspond to body regions in an inverted-fetus map. Many meridians also pass through the ears. Change is thought to come through qi flow and through sympathetic and parasympathetic regulation.

What can ear seeds help with?

They may sit in plans for sciatica, chronic pain, migraine, insomnia, bloating, constipation, weight gain, menstrual cramp, anxiety, and addiction support. They are an adjunct after a pattern read, not a cure on their own. Weight and addiction care still need the matching programme or specialist plan.

How do I apply ear seeds at home?

Clean and dry the outer ear. For one-sided pain, use the same-side ear. Attach with tweezers or fingers, press about 10 times until warm, then massage two or three times a day. Wear 3–7 days. A first clinic placement is the surest map.

How long should ear seeds stay on?

About three to seven days, or as advised. They may fall off in the shower or with daily activity. Remove them after a week even if they are still attached, and immediately if the skin reddens, swells, or itches.

Are ear seeds the same as ear acupuncture?

Both stimulate 耳穴. Ear seeds are Vaccaria or bead plasters that do not pierce the skin, so you can press them between visits. Ear acupuncture uses fine sterile needles on ear points, often in the same session as body acupuncture, when a stronger or more precise stimulus is indicated.
