Acupressure for summer heat strain

Bai Hui (GV20) to clear the mind, He Gu (LI4) to move Qi when giddy, Lian Quan (CV23) for a dry throat, and Zhao Hai (KI6) to nourish Yin. Gentle home press on sticky days.

In brief

Four points often used for summer heat self-care: Bai Hui (GV20) at the crown, He Gu (LI4) in the hand web (skip in pregnancy), Lian Quan (CV23) above the hyoid for 30 seconds, and Zhao Hai (KI6) below the inner ankle with a swallow of saliva. Press gently. Educational support, not heat-stroke care.

  • Bai Hui (GV20), midpoint of a line between the ear tips over the crown.

The steps

  1. Bai Hui (GV20 · 百会) · 3–5 minutes

Draw a line between the tips of both ears over the top of the head and find the midpoint at the crown. Apply gentle fingertip pressure and massage for three to five minutes or until you feel clearer. Bai Hui helps clear the mind and lift the spirits when humid heat leaves you foggy.

  2. He Gu (LI4 · 合谷) · 3–5 minutes

Place one thumb over the webbed portion between the thumb and index finger of the other hand. The point sits near the tip of that pressing thumb, in the fleshy web. Press gently for three to five minutes. He Gu promotes Qi and Blood circulation and can ease dizziness from stagnated Qi. Pregnant people must skip this point.

  3. Lian Quan (CV23 · 廉泉) · 30 seconds

On the neck, in the depression above the upper border of the hyoid bone. Gently massage for 30 seconds only. Ease off if swallowing feels wrong.

  4. Zhao Hai (KI6 · 照海) · 1 minute

In a depression below the tip of the medial malleolus (inner ankle bone). Gently massage for one minute and swallow your saliva. Many people feel a sense of Yin nourishment in the throat.

FAQs

Quick questions

Which point should I start with?

Bai Hui is a clear starting point when the head feels heavy or foggy. Add He Gu only if you are not pregnant. Use Lian Quan briefly for a dry throat, then Zhao Hai to nourish Yin.

How often can I press these points?

Once or twice a day is a common educational habit. Keep the press kind. If heat strain keeps returning, book a consult rather than adding more home pressure.
