Press Feng Chi and Jian Jing for neck stiffness

Feng Chi (GB20) sits in the hollows at the base of the skull. Jian Jing (GB21) sits at the high point of the shoulder. Gentle home press alongside clinic care.

In brief

Two points often used when stiff neck sits with nape and shoulder load: Feng Chi (GB20) in the hollows below the occiput, between trapezius and sternocleidomastoid, and Jian Jing (GB21) at the midpoint between C7 and the acromion. Circle each side kindly for about one minute. Ease off if the press turns sharp.

Routine

The steps

  1. Feng Chi (GB20) · 1 minute each side

Cup the hands behind the head. Place the thumbs in the hollows at the base of the skull, in the depression between the trapezius and sternocleidomastoid muscles, level with the top of the ear. Circle gently for one minute each side. GB20 is a go-to for wind invading the nape, headache with stiff neck, and tight upper trapezius.

  2. Jian Jing (GB21) · 1 minute each side

Find the bony bump at C7 (the prominent vertebra at the base of the neck when you tip the chin slightly). Trace a line to the tip of the shoulder (acromion). GB21 sits at the midpoint, on the highest part of the shoulder muscle. Pinch or circle gently for one minute each side. Skip strong pressure in pregnancy.

FAQs

Quick questions

Which point should I start with?

Start with Feng Chi when the nape feels tight or a cold draft preceded the stiffness. Add Jian Jing when the shoulder tops feel like cables. You do not need both every time.

How often can I press these points?

Once or twice a day is a common educational habit. Keep the press kind. If the neck will not turn after a few days, book rather than adding more home pressure.
