Acupressure for lower back pain

Channels that run through the back include the Bladder, Gallbladder, and Governing vessel. These five points sit on or near those paths for a kind home press alongside clinic care.

In brief

Five points often used for lumbar self-care: Yaoyangguan (DU3) on the midline low back, Weizhong (BL40) in the knee crease, Huantiao (GB30) on the hip, Yaoyan beside the waist, and Houxi (SI3) on the hand while you ease the spine. Press gently. Educational, not a treatment for acute injury or nerve emergency.

  • Yaoyangguan (DU3): midline low back on the Governing vessel.

Routine

The steps

  1. Yaoyangguan (DU3) · 2–5 minutes

Place your thumbs on the highest points at both sides of the hip bone. Draw a line toward the mid-line of the back to find Yaoyangguan on the Governing vessel. Rub horizontally with the side of your palm for two to five minutes. Often used when pain sits on the midline of the lower back.

  2. Weizhong (BL40) · 2–5 minutes

Find the midpoint of the crease at the back of each knee. Press with your fingers for two to five minutes on both sides. Weizhong is a classic distal Bladder-channel point for lumbar ache and tight hamstrings.

  3. Huantiao (GB30) · 2–5 minutes

Lie face down. Fold both legs back so the heels come as close to the glutes as you can. The point sits in the soft hollow of the buttock beside the hip. Apply elbow pressure for two to five minutes. Used when lumbar pain radiates toward the hip or thigh.

  4. Yaoyan · 2–5 minutes

Place your thumbs on the highest points at both sides of the hip bone, then settle into the soft dimples of the low back (腰眼). Press with the thumbs for two to five minutes. A local point for dull lumbar ache.

  5. Houxi (SI3) · about 1 minute

On the ulnar side of the hand, in the depression proximal to the fifth metacarpophalangeal joint when the fist is lightly closed. Press hard enough to feel a dull ache, then slowly move the back (forward, back, side to side) for about one minute while holding the press.

FAQs

Quick questions

Which point should I start with?

Yaoyangguan (DU3) is the local midline point. Add Weizhong (BL40) for a distal Bladder-channel press. Use Huantiao when pain pulls toward the hip or thigh. You do not need all five every time.

How often can I press these points?

Once or twice a day is a common educational habit. Keep the press kind. If lumbar pain lasts more than a few weeks, book a consult rather than adding more home pressure.
